According to Rebecca Wright, RD, LD, nutrition specialist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, studies show that certain chemicals in fruits and vegetables not only help prevent cancer, but they actually slow down cancer growth. Wright also tells her patients to 'go for the color'--the brighter the fruit, the better. Darker produce contains more cancer-fighting nutrients. Choose red grapes over green ones. Red grapes and summer berries are bursting with vitamins and antioxidants that inhibit cancer.
Rich in vitamin C Citrus fruits such as grapefruits and oranges are rich in vitamin C, an ideal anti-oxidant that helps protect against aging and disease by neutralizing cell-damaging free radicals. Red grapefruit has the extra bonus of lycopene, a carotenoid credited with helping protect against both prostate cancer and heart disease. Cantaloupe is an ideal summer fruit -- it's rich in carotenoids, which may have skin protective effects. According to research, carotenoids seem to accumulate in the skin, providing added protection from the sun's damaging rays. Nectarines also contain carotenoids and are a great source of fiber, which can help reduce the risk of colon cancer.
